OEM Ford Brakes
How brakes work seems as simple as pressing a brake pedal. However, what your brakes do to slow and eventually stop your Ford is more complicated.
How Braking Works
The process starts with your master brake cylinder. It sends brake fluid to each brake caliper using a network of brake hoses and brake lines. Each of these calipers clamps a brake pad to a brake rotor. Older Ford vehicles use a brake shoe instead of a pad, and it presses a brake drum instead of a rotor. The pads and rotors (or shoes and drums) generate friction as they rub together. This friction slows your wheels and stops your tires spinning. A control module or wheel speed sensors may also help, depending on which Ford model you drive.
Signs Your Brakes are Going Bad
Sooner or later, though, OEM brakes can go bad, even the top-quality systems Ford makes. How can you tell when it's time to change brakes? There are signs you can look for. They include a brake warning light, odd brake noises, shuddering during braking, and a brake pedal that feels too soft or low. Worse symptoms of brake problems include less grip, taking longer to stop, and even pulling sideways when braking. The worst sign, however, is grinding. It often indicates your brakes have gone bad, with real-time rotor damage happening because your pads have worn out.
